What makes a good domain

A few simple rules make a name easier to remember, easier to share, and harder to mistype.

Keep it short

Shorter names are easier to remember, fit on a business card, and leave less room for typos. Aim for two or three words at most.

Pass the phone test

Say it out loud to someone. If they can type it without asking how it's spelled, you've got a good one.

Skip hyphens and numbers

"Joes-Plumbing-4U" is hard to say and easy to get wrong. Plain letters work best.

Start with .com

It's what most people type by default. If it's taken, a clear .net, .org, or an ending like .store is a fine second choice.

Add your city or service

If your exact name is taken, try adding where you work or what you do, like "smithdentalaustin" or "riverbakerycakes".

Check it's really yours to use

Make sure the name doesn't copy another company's brand, and look for matching social media handles while you're at it.

From name to live website

Found a name you like? We take care of the technical side.

  1. Find your name

Search above and pick a domain that's available. Not sure? Send us a few options and we'll help you choose.

  2. Apply for your website

Tell us about your business and the domain you want. We help you register it in your name, and you pay the registration fee directly.

  3. We connect it and go live

We set up DNS and SSL, connect the domain to your new site, and launch once you approve it.

Domain questions, answered

How accurate is the availability check?

We check live public registry data for each name. If the registry has no record of a domain, we show it as available. That's a strong signal, but a name isn't yours until it's registered, and some names are reserved or sold at premium prices by the registry. We confirm everything before registering.

Who owns the domain?

You do. The domain is registered in your name, subject to the registrar's rules. Domain registration fees are billed directly to you, not bundled into your website plan.

I already have a domain. Can I still use Website Sherpa?

Yes. Keep it where it is. We'll ask for access to your domain registrar (or walk you through the settings) and point your existing domain at your new site when it's ready to launch.

Should I get a .com or is another ending fine?

A .com is still the safest choice because it's what most people type by default. If the .com you want is taken, a clear .net, .org, or a niche ending like .store can work well, especially if it keeps the name short and easy to say.

Why can't I search for .co, .io, or .us?

Most country-code endings don't publish the public registry data our search uses. If you want one of those, get in touch and we'll check it for you by hand.
